AMORSOLO, Cesar Sr.

 

Born Sta Cruz Manila 1903 died 1998. (Conservative realism) UP School of Fine Arts, 1935.

 

 

Son of Alejandro Amorsolo, a brother of Philippine National Artist Fernando Amorsolo. Father was a lawyer by profession, but also painted. Orphaned at the age of six, went to live with Uncle Fernando, serving as assistant for 30 years.

 

Exhibited in Manila and Hong Kong. Also exhibited in Los Angeles where he lived for seven years. On his return to the Philippines in the 1980’s mounted a show at Galerie Bleue

 

A member of Gabriel Custodio’s Friday Group, and of the conservative Academy of Filipino Artists. Has a fine hand and does excellent renditions of Muslim maidens and sampaguita vendors. His paintings of rural life and scenery carry the unmistakable Amorsolo lighting.

 

Commissioned works include the illustrations for the American regime textbook, "Your Country and Mine". Illustrated for many other Ginn & Co books.

 

A Mabini artist, liked to do oil and pastel folk genre and occasional watercolours.
