Tellins
Family Tellinidae. This is one of the colourful, popular families of thin, oval clams common in most parts of the world. The brightly coloured species are mainly found in shallow tropical seas.
Solenidae & Cultellidae
A large family of burrowing shallow-water elongate clams with worldwide distribution. Many are edible.
Clams
Clams. A common name for a many types of bivalve having numerous sub-classes,
orders, superfamilies, families etc. Some species of clam have a lifespan of only 1 year, others are known to live 500 years.
Tusks
Class Scaphopoda. Worldwide in shallow and deep waters, these small shells are open at each end. Water is pumped in and out of the small end which protrudes above the sand, About 1,000 species.
Sundials
Family Architectonica. The sundial shells are flat and with a large umbilicus. The operculum is horny, sometimes button shaped. Most species are tropical in shallow to deep water.
Volutes
Family Volutidae. The large and colourful volutes are among the most popular collector's items.
Many live in deep water and are difficult to obtain. All are carnivorous and most are tropical.
Star-shells
Family Astraeinae. A large family related to top shells (Trochidae). They have
a conical shape, and are known for their frills and great variability in depths that
they are found at.
Giant Clams
Family Tridacnidae. Limited to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, these large clams
rest on the bottom with the hinge down and the gaping edge up, so that sunlight may
reach the huge rolled edges of the mantle. Algal food is grown in the fleshy mantle. There
are fewer than a dozen species of these giant clams, the largest reaching a weight of 225kg.
